10 benefits of breast milk you never learned in pregnancy class

Written by Vicky Youngman, The fairy birthmother

If you’re an expectant or new parent, you’ve probably heard the basics about breastfeeding: it’s natural, nutritious, and great for bonding. But honestly? That’s only scratching the surface. There’s so much happening behind the scenes that most antenatal classes don’t cover. Breast milk is incredible, and here are 10 mind-blowing ways it benefits both you and your baby that I always teach new and expectant parents.

1.Breast milk changes as your baby grows

Breast milk isn’t just milk. It’s a living, changing fluid. Morning feeds contain more cortisol to help your baby wake up, while night feeds are rich in sleep-supporting hormones. As your baby grows, your milk adapts. No formula can do this, it’s personalised magic from your body.

2.It’s a brain booster

Breast milk contains DHA, ARA, and other nutrients essential for brain and eye development. But here’s the wow factor: it also has compounds that support memory, learning, and problem-solving. Some studies even show breastfed babies score higher on certain cognitive tests later in childhood.

3.Built-in immunity for your baby

Your milk is packed with antibodies, white blood cells, and immune-boosting proteins that can’t be replicated. It protects against infections, viruses, and long-term conditions like allergies and asthma. Think of every feed as a tiny superhero shield.

4.Protects against long-term health issues

Research shows breastfed babies are less likely to develop obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers later in life. This long-term health boost is rarely discussed in standard pregnancy classes, but it’s real and life-changing.

5.Perfect for premature babies

If your baby arrives early, breast milk can be lifesaving. It’s easier to digest, full of protective proteins, and contains growth factors formula can’t match. Even small amounts make a huge difference in reducing risks of serious complications and research shows it can even reduce the amount of time needed in NICU

6.Supports maternal health

Breastfeeding benefits you too. It helps your uterus shrink back faster, reduces postpartum bleeding, lowers your risk of breast and ovarian cancer, and even burns extra calories. Nursing can support your physical recovery in the early weeks.

7.Supports mental health

Breastfeeding releases oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which promotes bonding and reduces stress. There’s evidence it can even help protect against postpartum depression, making it a win-win for both you and your baby.

8.Natural pain relief

Ever noticed your baby calms down at the breast? That’s not just comfort, breast milk contains natural pain-relieving compounds. From teething to vaccination discomfort, those feeds are helping your baby manage pain naturally.

9.Adapts when your baby is sick

If you or your baby catch a bug, or are introduced to a pathogen, your body responds. Breast milk changes to include specific antibodies to fight that illness. Formula can’t do this, your body is actively protecting your child in real time.

10.It’s totally personalised

Every drop of breast milk is unique to your baby. Your diet, environment, genetics, and even your baby’s saliva influence its makeup. No other food comes close, it’s a fluid made just for your child.

Why most antenatal classes don't teach this

Most pregnancy classes in the UK focus on positions, latch basics, and maybe a few tips on supply. They rarely cover the science, long-term benefits, or practical strategies that make breastfeeding easier. That’s why I created my Prepare to Breastfeed course, supporting new parents locally and online, so everyone can access the gold class antenatal education that is my course.

You’ll leave feeling informed, empowered, and ready to give your baby the very best start!
